Homework: An Essential Part Of Development According to education.com, “Across five studies, the average (50th percentile) student doing homework had a higher unit test score than 73 percent of students not doing homework.” There may be some negative ways that homework can take effect on family, athletic, and religious time, but overall the good effects of homework outweigh the bad. Chillicothe Elementary School children should have homework to help them understand the subject, teach them responsibility, and manage their time. First, doing homework helps the children better understand and apply what they are learning in class. Many times the hours in a school day are not always enough for the children to completely understand each subject they learn. After a student learns new information, he or she will need to apply that to many other instances later in the year. For them to fully understand the subject, kids will need to practice what they learn in class. The saying “practice makes perfect” is just as true for school work as it is for extracurricular activities. Many times the teacher is busy helping all of the students so there isn’t enough time for each student individually. Homework is a good way for one-on-one help with either a teacher after class or even a parent at home, so kids can improve their understanding of the subject. Furthermore, homework in elementary school will help children learn to be responsible in many other situations later on in life. Getting homework benefits the kids because they have to be responsible for learning after class on their own. The kids learn that if they don’t do their homework it is only a detriment to themselves. Then, after doing the homework, the children are in charge of getting the homework back to school and turning it in. Homework is a good way of giving children a small amount of responsibility at an early age. Lastly, having homework at a young age helps children as they get older because they will already know how to manage their time wisely. When kids are in elementary school it’s good for them to get minimal homework, so they can get into a routine. As children grow older, they will receive more homework as they advance in their schooling career. Without homework it is difficult to go from nothing to having the same amount of work older kids get. Receiving homework will assist them in knowing how to manage their time in extracurriculars as well. Younger children need to be getting homework so that as time goes by time management becomes a useful habit. Giving homework to the elementary school would benefit the children by helping them understand the subject, teaching them to take responsibility, and teaching them time management.Today, many people disagree about the amount of homework and the idea of homework in general but is critical for the students of Chillicothe elementary school to have homework so the children are able to achieve the average 73 percent higher test scores than students not receiving homework. The policy right now of no homework should be changed to having at least one subject a night per week.
